Vietnam: A Journey Through Culture, Cuisine, and Scenic Wonders
We had been planning to visit a Southeast Asian country for quite some time. After extensive research and brainstorming, we decided on Vietnam.
I was particularly excited about this trip as it marked my first international journey in six long years. We landed in Ho Chi Minh City on December 24, 2024, around 10 AM. Upon arriving at our hotel in the city center, we left our luggage in the lobby since check-in wasn’t until 2 PM. With a few tasks to complete before starting our adventure, like exchanging currency and getting a Viettel SIM card, we set off on foot. Despite our efforts, we couldn’t find an open SIM store and decided to revisit this task later in the evening.
After a quick brunch at the hotel and some rest, we booked a Grab to a Viettel store and successfully purchased a SIM. Feeling hungry again, we opted for pizza instead of Vietnamese cuisine and headed to a nearby Domino’s. Surprisingly, their pineapple and cheese pizza, paired with honey, became one of my new favorites. While eating, we observed the bustling traffic outside—a chaotic yet oddly organized flow.
Post-lunch, we strolled to the Pink Church (Tan Dinh). Beautifully decorated for Christmas, the church was a vibrant masterpiece, and we spent some time admiring its charm. On our way back to the hotel, we stopped at Starbucks for coffee. Too tired to explore further, we chose an Indian restaurant, Dahi Handi, for dinner before calling it a day.
Day 2: Exploring Ho Chi Minh City
After a good night’s rest and a hearty breakfast, we explored the city on foot. For lunch, we tried Vietnamese cuisine at Tung’s Restaurant, where the highlight was the unique coconut coffee. Later, we wandered through Bến Thành Market and Saigon Square, enjoying the shopping experience. A visit to the Bitexco Financial Tower offered breathtaking views of Saigon from its 49th floor. In the evening, we discovered a cozy spot called Peachy Bar, where we relaxed with a couple of beers. Dinner was at another Indian restaurant, Dalcheeni.
Day 3: Mekong Delta Adventure
The following morning, we embarked on a trip to the Mekong Delta, often called the "rice bowl" of Vietnam. We explored two islands by speedboat and immersed ourselves in the culture of South Vietnam. Sampling fresh local fruits, green tea, honey, and banana chips was delightful. Sailing through the mangroves in traditional boats was a serene and unforgettable experience.
Days 4–5: Da Nang and Hoi An
Next, we flew to Da Nang in central Vietnam, where seasonal rains greeted us. Despite the mixed weather, we enjoyed panoramic views from the Monkey Mountains and visited the Linh Ung Pagoda with its towering Lady Buddha statue. A trip to the ancient town of Hoi An amidst mesmerizing lantern-lit rains was a highlight of the day.
The next morning, we visited the misty Ba Na Hills, exploring the Golden Bridge and French Village shrouded in clouds. The Beer Festival added to the fun with complimentary drinks. Later, we returned to Da Nang and witnessed the mesmerizing fire show at Dragon Bridge.
Days 6–8: Hanoi and Sa Pa
We then flew to Hanoi, Vietnam's capital. A visit to Train Street offered the unique experience of sipping coconut coffee as a train passed by. After a relaxed evening stroll, we prepared for our journey to Sa Pa the next day.
In Sa Pa, a charming town at 5,200 feet above sea level, the rainy season hampered visibility. After a tiring bus journey, we explored Cat Cat Village, learning about local culture. The next day, we visited Fansipan Peak and immersed ourselves in the natural beauty before returning to Hanoi. Unfortunately, traffic delays disrupted our New Year’s Eve plans.
Days 9–10: Halong Bay and Final Day in Hanoi
The New Year began with a trip to Halong Bay, a highlight of our journey. Aboard a cruise, we enjoyed lunch, sunbathing, and kayaking. A memorable moment was rescuing a fellow traveler whose kayak capsized. In the evening, we relaxed on the sun deck and had a candlelit dinner. The next day, we visited the stunning "Surprising Caves" and even met Indian actor Rajit Kapur. We returned to Hanoi for a well-earned rest.
On January 3, our final day, we explored Hanoi by walking around Hoàn Kiếm Lake. Observing locals dancing and working out by the lake was a heartwarming experience. After some evening shopping, we headed to the airport, leaving Vietnam with mixed memories of a fascinating country.
